Howard Stern as Doctor Doom? It Could Happen

Howard Stern stirred the Marvel pot this week, and his comments could suggest that a Doctor Doom movie is coming…with Stern himself playing the lead.

Stern, the most famous radio personality on the planet, may have spoiled a not-so-secret surprise. Ever since Disney acquired Fox and all its movie rights, there was no question that Doctor Doom would join the MCU. In what manner and what version we would see was a different matter. Now it would seem that the cat is out of the proverbial bag.

Before all the Fantastic Four fans of the world, myself included, rejoice let’s unpack the actual quote. Earlier this week, Stern was live on his talk show when he let the Doctor Doom news slip. The story is that he thought the microphone was off. However, the mike was still live, and listeners caught a tantalizing tidbit.

In a transcript from Collider, Stern said, “They're going over the schedule with me, and it's going to suck... I told you, I'm going to do Doctor Doom. That's the thing. But believe me, I'm fucking miserable about it... I called Robert Downey Jr., and I was asking him acting techniques... Do you have a number for Jon [Favreau]?”

What should we make of the comments? Does it confirm that Doctor Doom is in the Fantastic Four reboot? Does it suggest that Doom will star in his own movie?

For that matter, the quote sounds like Stern will play some version of Doom, which doesn’t surprise me. After all, Marvel Studios has no issue making jokes out of beloved characters. Before Josh Brolin got the Thanos job, Marvel was very seriously considering either Pauly Shore or Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens for the role.

When it comes to Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four, the internet has been begging Marvel to cast John Krasinski and Emily Blunt as Reed and Sue Richards as well as Giancarlo Esposito as Victor Von Doom. You know what Kevin Feige and company say to that? Not so fast.

Feige has said that he gave the fans what they wanted by casting Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic in Multiverse of Madness only to murder him minutes later. So much for that dream. Putting Stern in the part just to give fans the middle finger would be par for the course.

With the Multiverse taking the starring role in the MCU, it leaves plenty of room for experimentation. Stern could very well be a Doom variant from an alternate universe. Of course, the quote is just vague enough that he may be playing himself or another role that is connected to Doctor Doom. The fact that he complained about the schedule and needing acting advice from RDJ suggests it’s more than a cameo.

If nothing else, Stern has created publicity for himself, and he is a world-renowned self promoter. It makes me wonder if he knew the microphone was on the entire time. Say what you will, but I firmly believe that nothing Marvel-related gets “leaked” without Feige knowing about it. I would imagine Disney’s lawyers are thorough in getting non-disclosure agreements signed before talking to anyone about potential MCU roles. For Stern to “accidentally” spoil the Doctor Doom news could be part of the plan.
